Mumbai Indians in the IPL final but Tendulkar might be injured

Mumbai Indians were playing Bangalore Royal Challengers in the first semi final of IPL. I am sure Bangalore were hurting that the semi finals which were supposed to be hosted in Bangalore were rescheduled to be played in Mumbai for security reasons.

RCB started quite well with getting quick wickets of Tendulkar, Dhawan and Nayar. But the middle order which was considered to be Mumbai Indian’s problem area rose to the occasion. Keiron Pollard the giant from Trinidad and Tobago hammered his way through the Bangalore bowling to score 33 runs of 12 balls.

RCB started the chase well but fell flat towards then end after the first 9 overs. Mumbai Indians probably have the best attack of the tournament and chasing 184 under pressure was a little too much for them.

I think today Royal Challengers were royally beaten by a very good side who have won 10 games in the league phase.

Sachin Tendulkar injured!

Sachin Tendulkar still the highest run scorer for Mumbai Indians hurt himself by having the webbing of his hand get split while attempting a catch of Rahul Dravid. Split webbings usually are not very major injury but can be quite a problem for a batsman to grip the bat properly. Being a Mumbai Indians supporter and Sachin Tendulkar fan I hope five stitches  do not trouble the great man on 25th of April playing the IPL final.

Mumbai Indians have also secured their place from Champions League.

Dhoni goes berserk and Chennai Super Kings go into IPL Semis

Today’s IPL match between Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings was crucial as CSK had a good net-run rate but needed to win this game to keep that run-rate higher and also qualify for Semis. Kings XI Punjab did put up a strong total of 192 and looked like causing a upset.

It was almost an upset had it not been for MS Dhoni’s superb display of going berserk while batting. At one point CSK needed 52 runs of 24 balls. Chennai won the game with two deliveries to spare. The last over left Chennai to get 16 of 6 balls. Dhoni hit 4-2-6-6 to walk away with the match and also end up securing a Semi Final place.

Chennai Super Kings are the second team behind Mumbai Indians to secure their place in Semi Finals. Considering the other two spots are still open and only two matches are left to be played, shows what a competitive league this has been.

Chennai Super Kings are also the only team in IPL to have qualified for Semi finals in every edition. This I guess makes it one of the most consistent side. If Delhi Daredevils beat Deccan Chargers they will also qualify into the Semis and join CSK as only team to feature in all Semi final line ups of all editions of IPL.

Who is in the Semis?

Mumbai Indians are through with 20 points. CSK, RCB have got 14 points and will qualify thanks to a great Net Runrate. Delhi play Deccan and the winner will end up with 16 ponts and will be through.
Kolkata will hope Deccan lose badly so that if they win big against Mumbai tomorrow, they will qualify for the Semi Finals.

So who do you think is your line up for Semis? And more importantly who will win IPL 2010?

Mumbai Indians dent Royal Challengers Bangalore net runrate

I grew up in Mumbai and have stayed for most part of my life in Mumbai, so saying my favorite IPL team is Mumbai Indians is a given. But I like Royal Challengers Bangalore as as team which has a great balance. It has my favourite fast bowler Dale Steyn and also one of the world best all time great all-rounder going by the name Jacques Kallis. Not to forget greats like Kumble and Dravid are also part of RCB.

Today was surely not a auspicious day in Bengaluru (Bangalore) with a crude bomb going off minutes before the game in a generator room. The match was delayed by an hour but did take place.

Mumbai Indians posted a considerably large score of 191/4 and restricted RCB to 134/9 and winning the match by 57 runs.

RCB were favorites to get into Semi finals as they had a very high net-runrate. This loss to Mumbai Indians was disastrous and leaves them with a net Runrate of +0.219. It was at a comfortable +0.467.

The Semi Final battle has really warmed up and I think RCB might just still make it and we might have a Mumbai Indians vs Royal Challengers Bangalore final. What do you think? Do drop in your comments.

Mumbai Indians in Semis while others in knockout situation

The good thing about IPL is that there are no structurally weak or strong team. You do not have poor or weaker on paper. Their weakness or strengths are revealed only during the tournament and that’s why predicting things are very difficult.

A couple of days ago Mumbai Indians beat Rajasthan Royals to be the first team to make it to the Semi-finals of IPL. This is Mumbai Indians first time appearance in IPL semis. The only team that has never been in IPL semis would be Kolkata Knight Riders but they are still in with a slim chance.

Mumbai is through, who will be next ?

Now that Mumbai Indians are through who will be next in the semi-finals. The tournament has become a virtual knock out and every match will see a new drama unfolding. I think previous post written by Rahul Bansal makes it quite clear that he does not think much will be done by Rajasthan Royals who he thinks are only good to play ‘Oongli Cricket’ (Idea), but they are surviving in the top four but will have to win all matches.

The Points Table as on 12th April 2010

This leaves RCB, DD, RR, DC with 12 points and CSK and KKR are tied at 10 points each. Today evening’s match Kolkata Knight Riders will plays against Chennai Super Kings and chances are one of them will be knocked out. 😉

So who do you think will make it to Semi-Finals. Do drop in your comments to play the guessing game. 🙂

Rajasthan Royals should play (idea) “oongli” cricket!

After watching pathetic fielding (dropped catches, missed run-out chances and countless misfields) and poor running between the wicket, by Rajasthan Royals player, I strongly believe that Rajasthan Royals players have some serious issue with their bones and muscles.

If by any chance, they can move atleast their finger (“oongli”) smartly, they should play “oongli” cricket! 😀

What do you think???

(Disclaimer: Do not think that I am fan of Rajasthan Royals. I am fan of kolkata knight riders and that too for only DADA aka Saurav Ganguly!)

Watch live IPL matches on YouTube

In my previous post I wrote about IPL website allowing a great interface for setting reminders with the IPL season schedule. So now after reminders what next? The Cricket for obvious reasons. IPL matches will be streamed live on YouTube right through the season.

Is IPL a test run for YouTube?

YouTube later in the year is schedule to partner FIFA for the Soccer World Cup. I guess the viewership will be massive for that event and showing IPL live will allow You Tube a test run before a truly massive event. This makes sense and also makes YouTube a great brand in India. I recently saw many hoardings in innocuous places like buses and train stations. We never had a website being promoted in such places.

So when it is match time and you cannot see a television set around for you to tune into, watch it live on YouTube IPL channel.

Set reminders with IPL 2010 complete schedule for teams and matches

The IPL 2010 season is about to start within the next couple of days. I thought I would publish the calendar for IPL matches to be played this season but I think it would be more prudent and helpful to have a calendar which was interactive as in something with which we could set reminders for following our favorite teams.

Visit the IPL calendar website and you can look through all the matches being played through the next 7 weeks. I could toggle the view by either selecting your favorite team or the venue. Then you can select the matches you want reminders to by checking on a box.

This is great as now can be notified by email or SMS. I could also download the entire season schedule as a PDF file. 🙂

I think the IPL has been really proactive this year in reaching out to people through the internet and also really making accessibility very easy. The easy method of buying tickets including allowing people access to information online which is customizable for your own needs is a great leap for Indian cricket administration.

My only wish is when a Test match series is plays or a ODI series for that matter would BCCI give people the same sort of friendly accessibility? I guess only time will tell.

For now regarding IPL, I guess we can say let the games begin. 🙂

New IPL advertisement lays out the red carpet [Video]

IPL when it was held in 2008 was a massive success and shook the cricketing world. In all probably it has also shifted the power base of Cricket to India very significantly.
In 2009 when IPL was was shifted out of India and in South Africa. IPL is back in India this year and Sony has put out a advertisement titled “Saare Jahan se Accha”.
It obviously is in reference that there is no place like India have the IPL taking place.
Do watch the video below and let me know your thoughts on the advertisement.

What went wrong with the Indian Team at the ICC World Twenty20 Super8?

After the early exit of Indian team from the tournament, commentators, media and critics got busy with finding out the “exact” cause of the poor performance of the team. Rightly so, when there are no more matches to be played by the Indian team, that is the only thing they can talk about.

If there was an award for a team for best coverage around the world (whether or not winning matches) India would have won it by now already.

I tried to restrain myself at pointing out the problem areas but could not stop myself to collate the popular theories taking rounds. Here is a small collection of few of the reasons that are being talked about. Not sure about the ranking of these but there surely seems like more than one reason for India’s poor performance with each contributing to varying magnitude.

Lack of innovation

Dhoni, who is known for his smart thinking on the ground, missed the edge somewhere.

Absence of the right aggression

The fearless boys playing with sheer aggression, who won the 2007 title, were missing.

Complacency

It was very visible during the middle overs when they were batting at ease and were so confident that they would be able to hit around in the last five overs.

Fatigue

Too much cricket since October, 2008! This has been pointed as the number one reason for India’s poor performance. And, there is still not enough breathing time as the team leaves for West Indies straight from England.

Media trouble

For the first time, Dhoni faced stiffness from the media over Sehwag’s issue. Drift between the Captain and Vice Captain was making news all around. There was a definite loss of crucial time for the management, which they could have utilized in strategizing for the matches to come.

Dhoni ran out of big shots

No question about his work behind the stumps but his batting was a bit let down. For last one year Dhoni has been playing an anchor’s role in the Indian batting line up and has intentionally changes hi style to suit the requirement. When it was must required for him to hit big shots, he could not really get them going. We could not witness the explosiveness that he was known for.

Short-pitched bowling

West Indian and English fast bowlers devastated the Indian top order with short pitch bowling. Everyone started pointing out the shortcoming of the Indian batsmen. But, then what happened in the match against South Africa? It were the spinners who forced the Indian batting at the back foot. Clearly, the Indian batsmen looked jaded through out and just could not hit the balls out of the stadium.

Sending Jadeja up the order

When, the Indian batsmen were struggling against the English pace attack, inexperienced Jadeja was sent in, while in-form Yuvraj and Dhoni stayed in the dug-out. I still could not understand what was the message given to him when walked-in? Was he given the license to just hit around and let it be a gamble or was he told to stick around to consolidate the inning? What ever it was, both ways it was not a good decision. At least, does not look like a good one, after India lost the match to England by 3 runs while Jadeja scored only 22 off 30 balls. Shall we call it a match-losing effort or a match-losing decision?

Fielding mishaps

Indians were not consistent in the field. Though there were instances of exceptional fielding performances but were limited to only few individuals. Poor show by others brought the overall performance to just “average”. Boundaries were scored by opponents sending the ball between the legs of the fielders. Can a team afford to do that when the margin of errors and victories is so thin in T20 matches? Somehow the field placement too was a bit shabby, not so agile fielders in the team kept on finding the ball coming towards them more than the better fielders.

Team selection

Few selection related decisions than are under the scanner of the critics:

  • Playing an extra bowler in the batsmen oriented format of the game.
  • Giving priority to pick up extra spinner (Ojah or Jadeja) while Dinesh Karthik could not get a chance. Yusuf Pathan, Raina and Rohit Sharma could have bowled more along with Yuvraj Singh to fill in the gap.
  • Ishant Sharma was in the team all through while Praveen Kumar was not given any chance.
  • RP Singh, the in-form bowler and the highest wicket taker in the IPL, should have been included in all the matches. And at least must have been given to bowl full quota of his overs against England.

Missing Sehwag

Whether Sehwag hits a 50 or not, even if he is at crease for three overs, all the strategies and tactics of the opposition goes for a toss. Though on papers the Indian line-up looked so bright, no one could actually replace Sehwag. He is the one who actually scares the bowlers even before the match begins. Only Yuvraj Singh could add some sensation to the Indian batting, while others could not do much to actually trouble the bowlers.

Let us have a quick look at what everyone is saying…

Gary Kirsten (Coach, Indian team)

He blames players fatigue levels and minor injuries that they carried from IPL to WT20 for the poor performance.

“Fatigue was definitely a factor, as were many other things… I don’t want to use that as an excuse but it was a factor. We weren’t an energetic team…”

Kirsten had pointed out mental fatigue to be a big challenge even before the start of the tournament.

MS Dhoni (Captain, Indian Team)

MS Dhoni accepts the fact that the team’s performance was not up to 100% of their potential and missed to at par with the international standards.

“There never was a time when the majority of the guys performed in one match, it was usually two bowlers in one game or three in another, with an off-day for a couple of them, or one man scored and the rest didn’t so we never performed as a unit.”

Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar has backed the Indian Skipper- MS Dhoni and has refused to blame him for his team’s exit from the world cup.

“Dhoni will bear the brunt of the attack… but is there anybody better to lead India than him? “Dhoni is a young captain and is still learning the trade.”

Sandip Patil

He does not subscribe to the theory of blaming IPL for India’s poor performance and questions the experimentation with the batting order in the crunch matches.

“Tell me how come players of England, South Africa and West Indies (who participated in IPL) are praising it (IPL) to prepare themselves for the World T20?… How did he (Kirsten) allowed Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni and Yusuf Pathan to sit padded up while sending someone else (Ravindra Jadeja) up the order?”

LalChand Rajput

He gives credit to the others who, according to him, had better strategies that worked against India.
